Township Explores Bird Town Pennsylvania Designation

At the May 27th Board of Supervisors meeting, the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) presented an exciting update: North Coventry is exploring becoming a designated Bird Town Pennsylvania community. EAC Secretary John Werth introduced the program and explained its many benefits for both wildlife and residents.

What Is Bird Town Pennsylvania?

Bird Town Pennsylvania is a structured, statewide program working with municipalities to address threats to birds through education, engagement, and habitat conservation. With over 85 communities already involved—including areas around Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh—the program is rapidly expanding and offers a wealth of tools and support.

Why Join?

Joining Bird Town provides access to free, vetted resources and achievable action plans to help improve local habitats—not only for birds but for all wildlife and community members. It also opens the door to:

  • Collaboration with conservation partners like Audubon chapters, PA Game Commission, Master Gardeners, and more

  • Volunteer opportunities and citizen science projects

  • Free workshops, training, and resource toolkits

  • Regular networking events including virtual and in-person regional gatherings

  • Access to mini-grants and funding opportunities

Community Benefits

Bird Towns can distribute professionally designed educational brochures and utilize a library of articles and resources for social media and newsletters. The initiative also provides two annual eNewsletters and exclusive content for Bird Town leaders.

Cost and Commitment

There is just a one-time application fee of $100. From there, the support, training, and materials are provided at no additional cost.
